Area converter
Convert one area into 14 metric, imperial and East Asian units at once
Pick the units at both ends to see the result. The common conversions row covers pairs such as mu to square metres.
This affects display only. Conversion always uses full precision.

Hectares and mu are an exact integer ratio: one hectare is 15 mu.
Technical details & limits
Conversions run through the square metre. Mu and ping use the exact fractions 2000/3 and 400/121 square metres, the acre uses its defined value of 4046.8564224 square metres, and the hectare is 10000 square metres.
About this tool
Enter a value and pick its unit to get every other area unit at once: metric from square kilometre to square millimetre, hectare and are, the imperial square mile, acre, square yard, square foot and square inch, plus the Chinese mu and the East Asian ping. Everything is computed in your browser.
Use cases
- Convert a listing’s square feet into square metres.
- Compare a plot size across mu, hectares and acres.
- Convert the ping used in Taiwanese and Japanese property listings into square metres.
How to use
- Type a number. Decimals and scientific notation such as 1.5e3 are accepted.
- Pick the unit the value is in and the unit you want it in. The ⇄ button swaps the two.
- The summary line gives the target unit; the table below lists the metric and imperial units together with mu and ping.
- Adjust the significant digits for a shorter or longer number. The conversion itself always runs at full precision.
Notes
Mu uses 2000/3 square metres, about 666.67. Ping uses 400/121 square metres, about 3.3058. Property terms such as gross and usable floor area describe what is being measured, which is a separate question from unit conversion.
FAQ
- How many square meters and Chinese mu are in one hectare?
- 1 hectare equals 10000 square meters and, under this tool's market-mu definition, 15 mu. A mu uses the exact factor 2000/3 square meters. Confirm the original unit and measurement convention before converting land records. The resulting area is a unit conversion rather than evidence of survey accuracy, ownership boundaries, or the precise area accepted by a registration authority for a particular parcel of land.
- How many square meters are in one ping?
- This tool defines 1 ping as 400/121 square meters, approximately 3.305785 square meters. It retains the full conversion factor internally and lets you adjust displayed precision. When comparing property areas, also check whether each source measures interior area, gross floor area, or another scope. Matching the units does not make differently defined areas directly comparable, and a precise conversion cannot resolve an ambiguous original measurement basis.
- Why are acres and hectares not equal area units?
- Acres and hectares have different definitions and need their own area conversion factor. 1 acre equals 4046.8564224 square meters, while 1 hectare equals 10000 square meters. Both describe area, so a length conversion ratio cannot be applied directly to their numeric values. Confirm the unit before comparing land sizes, and remember that additional displayed decimals do not improve the accuracy of the original surveyed or estimated area.
