Technical details & limits

About this tool

Browse common emoji across eight categories — smileys and emotion, people and gestures, animals and nature, food and drink, travel and places, activities, objects and symbols — or search by a Chinese or English keyword, or by Unicode code point. Click a card to copy the character; the line underneath gives its code point, listing the whole sequence when a variation selector is involved. Anything you copy is kept under Recent copies, stored only in this browser.

Use cases

  • Pick an emoji for a document, a commit message or a chat.
  • Find an emoji by a Chinese or English keyword without knowing its official name.
  • Look up an emoji’s Unicode code point for code or an escape sequence.

How to use

  1. Narrow down with a category, or type a keyword into the search box.
  2. Keywords work in Chinese, in English, or as a code point — 笑, heart or U+1F600.
  3. Click a card to copy the character; what you copy appears under Recent copies.

Notes

The same emoji is drawn differently across devices, system versions and apps, and can even show as an empty box — the character has not changed, the current font simply has no glyph for it. This page carries a working selection, not the complete Unicode emoji set. Recent copies are written to this browser’s local storage and are never uploaded.

FAQ

Does the Emoji picker copy an image to the clipboard?
The picker copies Unicode text rather than an image file. Some emoji contain 1 code point, while others combine 2 or more into a displayed symbol. The destination operating system and font determine their final color and shape. Pasting the same text therefore does not guarantee identical artwork across devices, and the copied value should be handled as text when storing, counting, or sending it through another application.
Are recently copied Emoji synchronized between devices?
Recently copied emoji are stored only in the current browser and are not automatically synchronized between devices. The list retains up to 12 entries; copying a thirteenth distinct item removes the oldest 1. Clearing site storage also removes this local history. The copied value remains ordinary text, so you can still paste it elsewhere, but another browser will not inherit the picker's recent list from that action.
Why can one visible Emoji contain more than one character?
A visible emoji can consist of multiple Unicode code points, so its code point count can exceed 1. A base character combined with a variation selector already contains 2 code points, and joiners or modifiers can add more. Distinguish visible grapheme clusters from code points when enforcing text limits. A field measured in UTF-16 units or UTF-8 bytes may report yet another length for the same displayed symbol.
