FAQ
- How many states and districts are included in the US state code table?
- This table lists 50 states and 1 District of Columbia entry, giving 51 rows in total. Each row provides a name, a 2-letter abbreviation, and a capital. The district is listed separately and should not be described as an additional state. Overseas territories and military postal codes are outside this table's coverage, so it should not be treated as a complete list of every code accepted in postal addresses.
- Which US states do the abbreviations CA and NY identify?
- In this table, CA identifies California and NY identifies New York, with each abbreviation containing 2 letters. Their listed capitals are Sacramento and Albany respectively. Search either code to locate the relevant row among these 2 examples. Do not confuse a state's capital with its largest or best-known city, and keep the abbreviation separate from other address fields when transferring the information into a form.
- Can the US state abbreviation lookup validate ZIP codes?
- This lookup cannot validate ZIP codes; it only provides state names, abbreviations, and capitals. A state abbreviation normally contains 2 letters, while a basic ZIP code contains 5 digits. Check those fields independently when completing an address, because knowing the state code does not establish that a postal code belongs to a particular location. The table also does not verify street addresses or delivery availability for an entered destination.
